Biographical history
Henry Fowlds was born in 1790 in Scotland and married in 1813 to Jane Marshall Steele. Together they had ten children (Eliza, John, James S., Robert H., Elizabeth, Henry M., Mary C., William J., Mary Anne, and Theresa) of which only five survived (James S., Elizabeth, Henry M., William J., and Theresa). The family came to North America in 1821, settling first in New York, and then in Hartford in 1833. In 1834, they crossed the border and settled in Prince Edward County, Upper Canada. The Fowld's family settled in Asphodel Township in 1836, and then moved on to Westwood, where they set up a saw mill in conjunction with Dr. John Gilchrist in what was to become the village of Keene. On September 27, 1851, Henry Fowlds purchased from the Honourable James Crooks the water rights, lands and buildings then known as Crooks' Rapids, and later as Hastings. The Fowlds built upon this base, expanding their original saw mill to a corporate busisness of saw mill, grist mill, general store and post office. The three Fowlds' brothers, James, Henry M. and William, set up a lumber and flour business under the name of Jas. L. Fowlds and Bros. This company was terminated with the death of James Fowlds in 1884. The Fowlds were quite active in Hastings, occupying the seat of reeve, and the office of postmaster. James S. (1818-1884) married Margaret MacGregor and they had nine children between the years of 1845 and 1860. Their seventh child, Frederick W. (1857-1930), married Elizabeth Sutherland and they had three children, Helen, Eric, and Donald. Eric and Donald were soldiers in World War I and Helen was a nurse in the same war. Helen married Gerald Marryat after the war and became a remarkable local historian of the Peterborough region.

Biographical history
Helen Lauder Marryat (nee Fowlds) was born at Hastings, Ontario, October 28, 1889. She was the only daughter of Frederick W. Fowlds and the former Elizabeth Sutherland, and the great granddaughter of Henry Fowlds, pioneer lumberman and founder of Hastings. On the maternal side, her grandfather was John Sutherland, Mayor of Cobourg, Ontario, in 1875. She received her education at Hastings, and the Norwood High School, and she graduated as a nurse from Grace Hospital, Toronto. During World War I, Helen served as a nursing sister in France, the Dardanelles, Salonica, and England, and she was awarded the Royal Red Cross decoration by George V in recognition of gallantry under fire (she was wounded while helping to evacuate a hospital in the Middle East). On April 25, 1921, Helen Fowlds married Captain Gerald Marryat who had served in the War with the Canadian Engineers. They lived in Montreal and then retired to Hastings where Gerald conducted an insurance agency (which Helen continued to run after his death). Helen Marryat is best known as a local historian who collected information and wrote many newspaper articles on Hastings Ontario, Asphodel Township and Peterborough County. Helen Marryat died in Hastings (Ashfield House) on June 16, 1965.
Custodial history
The fonds remained within the Fowlds family until it was bequested to the Trent University Archives by Mrs. Helen Marryat (nee Fowlds).
Scope and content
The fonds consists of family and related papers of Henry Fowlds and his family including James S. Fowlds and H.M. Fowlds. It also includes business correspondence, invoices, some journals and cashbooks, mortgages as well as deeds regarding the business of Henry Fowlds, Jas. S. Fowlds and Bros. and H.M. Fowlds. In December 2001, Trent University Archives launched an online exhibit which depicts Helen Fowld's experiences in World War I. All her letters and diaries are transcribed and are found at the following site: [Nursing Sister Helen L.
