    Biographical history

    Erik Loder was born in 1933 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was educated at Bard College and received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Pratt. He taught drawing, print-making and painting at a number of colleges in the United States before moving with his wife Robin Loder to Canada in 1972 to live and work. He taught numerous courses at Sir Sandford Fleming College and in the Cultural Studies department at Trent University from 1980 until his death in 1993. His work was exhibited widely in Peterborough, Toronto, the United States and in Europe.

    This fonds was created by Erik Loder and was forwarded to the Trent University Archives by his widow, Robin Montgomery Loder.

    Scope and content

    This fonds consists of correspondence, sketches and class lecture notes of Erik Loder. Loder's theories of art are discernible in his jottings and notes. Also included are numerous art catalogues and exhibition notes; slides of Loder art works; sketches, drawings and paintings; personal cards and letters sent at the time of Loder's death in 1993; art auction and sale lists.

    This fonds is very dirty and contaminated with mold. Researchers should be cautioned before using.

    Much of the textual material is filed as received. Organization by subject matter has not been possible. Material was packed from 3 separate locations (Loder's office at Trent University, his studio and his home).

        Many Erik Loder pieces of art are located locally in the Art Gallery of Peterborough and private collections as well as in galleries and collections elsewhere.

        General note

        Outsized sketches, drawings, paintings, posters, broadsides and sculptures located in Large Materials Cabinet - Drawers A, B, C, & D and on top of cabinets, and in Drawers 49, 50, and 51. Others are free-standing.

        Ten framed canvasses are standing against the wall in the back of the manuscripts room and near entrance to SpC.

        Note: Approximately 30 additional sketches, drawings, paintings and sculptures were received in January 2000.
