Biography/History
Frances Anne Stewart (nee Browne) was born May 24, 1794, daughter of Reverend Francis Browne and Anna Maria Noble, in Dublin, Ireland. Her parents died while she was young and she was left in the care of her great-uncle, Robert Waller in Allanstown, Ireland, where she was raised by Harriet Beaufort, who managed the household. In the summer of 1816, Frances, and her aunt Susan went to visit some distant friends, the Stewarts, who lived near Belfast. This is where Frances met her future husband, Thomas Alexander Stewart (1786-1847). They were married December 16, 1816 and emigrated to Canada when the firm, which Thomas worked for, ran into financial trouble and eventually bankruptcy. Their three infant daughters emigrated with them. Ellen Dunlop (nee Stewart) was one of Frances and Thomas' daughters who Frances corresponded regularly with. Not only did Frances correspond with Ellen, but Catharine Parr Traill and Harriet Beaufort corresponded with Ellen as well. Years later, after Frances had died (in 1872), Ellen published an edited version of their correspondence entitled "Our Forest Home" in 1889. (Taken from: "The Canadian Encyclopedia." Edmonton: Hurtig Publishers, 1985.) Extensive biographical information on the Stewart family, plus friends, neighbours, and associates, may be found in accession [02-001]: https://www.trentu.ca/library/archives/02-001.
