Born out of the Canadian Commonwealth Federation (1932-1960) the New Democratic Party originated in 1961. It is a party which aims to represent the working class and unions of Canada in politics. It is a socialist party advocating the democratic left instead of right wing politics.
Custodial history
This fonds was created by Andrew McDonald in his research and preparation for a paper entitled "United We Stand: Labour and the New Party By-Election Victory in Peterborough in 1960". He consulted the National Archives of Canada and Queen's University Archives in Kingston, Ontario while preparing the paper. This fonds was in Andrew McDonald's custody before donation to the Trent University Archives.
Scope and content
This addition to the fonds consists of interviews with prominent NDP and labour activists recalling the 1960 by-election in Peterborough, and the early history of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the riding. As well there are related transcripts; newspaper articles and correspondence.
