    Biographical history

    Sydney Drysdale (Dale) Standen (1942-) was a professor and historian in the Department of History at Trent University from 1971 to 2006, after which he was appointed Professor Emeritus. He served as Chair of the Department of History, Liaison with Trent’s Frost Centre, and Principal of Lady Eaton College from 1981-1986.

    Dr. Standen was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up in Burnaby, British Columbia. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia in 1963, a Masters of Arts degree from University of Oregon in 1965, and a PhD from University of Toronto in 1975.

    Dr. Standen’s research pertains to early colonial history of Canada with a focus on New France, French-Indigenous relations, and how museums interpret history. He has also held various positions at the Canadian Canoe Museum, including Director of the Board until 2004. He assisted in the re-structuring of the Canadian Canoe Museum when they temporarily closed for financial reasons in 2003-2004. Dr. Standen also served as a Councilor of the Champlain Society, President of the French Colonial Historical Society, and Director of the Board of the Peterborough Historical Society (2018-2019).

    Scope and content

    Fonds consists of records documenting Dale Standen’s activities as a postsecondary student and professor. Files include personal and professional correspondence, lecture notes, and teaching background material with focus on Canadian history post contact, the fur trade, and New France. Fonds is arranged into three series: Correspondence and Trent University activities; Lectures notes for classes at Trent University and Vancouver City College; and Postsecondary coursework and essays.
