Biographical history
Ronald H. Perry was born at St. Catharines, Ontario and was educated at Ridley College in England. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. in 1926. He then attended Columbia University, acquiring a M.A. in 1932. Perry was on the staff of Pickering College, Newmarket, from 1927 to 1940. During the World War II he served with the RCAF as a squadron leader. After the War, he was Dean and Supervisor of Residences, Ajax division, University of Toronto from 1946 to 1949. In 1950, he served as Director of Educational Programs, Hart House, University of Toronto. On June 1, 1950, he was appointed Headmaster of Ashbury College in Ottawa. By 1974, Perry was Headmaster of Rosseau Lake School in Muskoka, Ontario. Throughout his life, Ron Perry has been an enthusiast of camping, canoeing and the outdoors in general. He became a staff member of Taylor Statten Camps in 1923 and remained closely connected with Camp Ahmek for many years. Perry wrote many of the camp's internal camp and canoe policy statements and was editor of the Canoe Lake Camp Echoes periodical during the early 1930's. Ron Perry published works include "The Canoe and You" (J.M. Dent and Sons, Canada Ltd., 1948) and "Canoe Trip Camping" (J.M. Dent, 1953). "The Canoe and You" was revised and reprinted as "Canoeing for Beginners" (G.R. Welch, Toronto/Association Press, New York, 1967).

2: Blank application forms, equipment lists, test papers for Taylor Statten Camps. nd.
3: Brochures on campcraft and canoeing standards; camping menus and recipes; articles on skills & requirements of canoe trippers; typescripts of articles written by R.H. Perry on Woodcraft, Canoeing, camp food, duplication sheets on campcraft requirements for various levels of campers. Most material seems to have been written by Perry during his association with Taylor Sattten Camps c. 1940's.
4: Correspondence and brochures on Easter Cruise led by R.H. Perry for boys at Pickering College, Newmarket where he was a teacher, 1936 and 1939. Cruise left from New York to West Indies during easter vacation period.
5: Copies of The Trading Post, a news bulletin issued at Taylor Statten Camps, by and for the staff. It contained articles on canoeing and camping and internal camp events, 1949-1950. Also included in this folder are copies of the Weekly Canoes Paper, 1948, which preceded The Trading Post.
6: Brochures and correspondence concerning a Camp Training centre at YMCA's Camp Pinecrest in 1948. The program was sponsored by the Extension Department of the University of Toronto, the Camping Association Canadian red Cross, Canadian Welfare Council Ontario Department of Education and the Department of Lands and Forrests. the purpose of the centre was to provide intensive training for camp directors and counsellors. The director was Professor Charles C.Hendry, School of Social Work University of Toronto.
7: University of Toronto Department of Physical and Health Education Course for camp Counsellors, May 1950. R.H. Perry was Chairman of that years program. Included are correspondence, lists of participants and printed schedules of events.
8: Correspondence concerning "Canoe Ontario" 1974.
9: Newspaper clippings re: "Christmas Cheer for British Children" fund raising drive. Activity by R.H. Perry, RCAF squadron leader.

1: Miscellaneous correspondence between Ron Perry and other individuals primarily on camping and related matters. Included at the beginning of this folder are an automobile insurance card and permits to drive through Algonquin Park. The correspondence dates from march 10, 1937 to March 31, 1969.
2: Pen and ink, and pencil sketches by H.P. Gauthier, Carter Storr and J. Crosby.
3: Newspaper clippings, correspondence, minutes of meetings and itineraries for the 1967 Centenary Journey in which 400,000 youths took part in a project to cover traditional canoe routes from coast to coast with parts of the routes being assigned to various YMCA, YWCA, guides, scouts and private camping enthusiasts. Ron Perry was involved in publicity for the National Committee.

Presentation to a discussion group of the Canadian Camping Association, April 9 1938 on Canoe Trips by Ron Perry. Also included is a brochure entitled "Camping Trips", May 1940, by F.A. McDougall, Superintendent of Algonquin park. This publication was sponsored by the Ontario Camping Association.
