Biographical history
Jean Shearman was born in Montreal. She was a great great granddaughter of Thomas Alexander Stewart and Frances Browne Stewart, and great granddaughter of their son, William Stewart and his wife, Louisa McNabb. She spent much of her life transcribing the Frances Stewart letters and researching the genealogy of the Stewart family and families with whom the Stewarts had some relationship. Ms. Shearman wrote A Sense of Continuity: The Stewarts of Douro along with her sister, Elizabeth Shearman Hall. She died in Toronto in 2005.
Custodial history
This fonds was acquired from the estate of Jean Shearman and was in the custody of Reverend John Shearman before it was forwarded to Trent University Archives in August 2005.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of research materials relating to early nineteenth-century Irish immigrants, Thomas Alexander Stewart and Frances Browne Stewart, of Douro Township, County of Peterborough in Ontario. Included in the research materials are photographs (including 3 daguerreotypes), genealogical family charts, and articles and papers relating to Stewart family descendents and other Peterborough settler families. Also included is the personal correspondence of Jean Shearman.
