Biographical history
Bruce LeCouffe is the great grandson of Walter J. Francis, engineer and bridge builder. Francis worked together on the construction of the Peterborough Lift Lock with Richard Birdsall Rogers. During that time, Francis was field supervisor and was responsible for the superstructure drawings.

Item was created by and in the custody of Bruce LeCouffe before it was donated to Trent University Archives.
Scope and content
CD consists of the scanned 400-page letterbook of Walter J. Francis. The letters are dated 1898-1906 and relate to the engineering practice of the writer. Of particular relevance to the Peterborough area are letters concerning the building of the Peterborough Lift Lock.

General note
The original letterbook of Walter J. Francis consists of 400 pages of carbon copies of all of his correspondence during the years 1898 to 1906. These letters have been scanned onto a CD by the great grandson of Francis. The CD is only available to researchers in our reading room, but an index to the contents of the CD has been reproduced below and a few selected letters have been included in digital form.
