This item is the marriage certificate of Henry Lapp of Baltimore, Canada West, and Hannah Hoag of Ausable who were married before the religious society of Friends at Westlake on April 27, 1848.

This item was donated by an unknown source. Additional biographical information was kindly sent to us in August 2006 by Mr. Arthur G. Hubbs. Hannah Lapp's obituary states that she was born in Vermont in 1823 and was the daughter of Elijah and Lydia Hoag, prominent members of the Society of Friends. After her education in Quaker schools, she moved to Prince Edward County, Canada West, as tutor in the family of Thomas Clark. She later worked as a teacher at Pickering College. She was the second wife of Henry Lapp who had been previously married to Susan Clark. Henry and Hannah lived near Cambray in Mariposa Township and had at least two sons: Dr. E.H. Lapp of Williamson, N.Y. and Mr. T.B. Lapp of Baltimore, Ontario. Hannah Lapp was buried in Baltimore (Ontario) cemetery.
