    Biographical history

    The Boyd family, in Canada, originated with Mossom Boyd who was born in India in 1814 and died at Bobcaygeon, Ontario July 23, 1883. He was a member of the Anglo-Irish gentry and emigrated to the Sturgeon Lake region of Upper Canada in 1834. In 1844 Mossom married Caroline Dunsford. He became assistant to Thomas Need, owner of the Bobcaygeon sawmill and he eventually took over the mill when Thomas Need returned to England in 1843. Mossom was able to develop the mill into a large lumbering enterprise with land holdings and timber rights in Albany, New York; Bobcaygeon, Peterborough, Prince Albert in Saskatchewan, 20 000 acres around Cowichan Lake in British Columbia and 260 square miles in Quebec. By the 1870's he had the largest enterprise in the region. After his death the business was run by his son, Mossom Rater Boyd, who extended the business into Quebec and Vancouver as well as moving into steamboating, stock raising and railway development. The Boyd enterprises not only included lumbering but also breeding polled Hereford cattle and cross-breeding cattle and buffalo. The Boyds were involved with the Lindsay, Bobcaygeon and Pontypool Railroad and the Trent Valley Navigation Steamship Company. This diversification helped the Boyd's through the lumber depression of the 1890's. Mossom Martin and his half-brother William Thornton Cust Boyd were active partners along with their cousin John MacDonald of Albany, New York in the firm of Boyd & Company. When Mossie died in 1914, the next generation became involved in the administration of the various estates and gradually disbanded the huge operation. The third generation of Boyds tended to have their own interests and professions although all were involved intermittently with the lumbering and stock farm concerns.     This fonds was created by and in the custody of the Boyd family until it was donated to the Trent University Archives.

    Scope and content

    This fonds consists of records encompasing three generations of the Boyd family of Bobcaygeon. The fonds has been divided into the following series: photographs and glass negatives; Reverend Henry C. Avant; Mossom Boyd; Mossom Martin Boyd (Mossie); Lillian de Grassi Boyd; the De Grassi papers which are records of Dr. Alex De Grassi, Lillian Boyd's father, a physician from Lindsay, Upper Canada; Gardiner Cust Boyd; Mildred Boyd; Winnett (Brownie) Boyd; Laurence Chadwick Boyd; Mossom de Grassi Boyd; A. Sheila Boyd; stamps; artifacts; business which deals with the Boyds interests in lumbering; agricultural papers which deal with the Boyd's farming interests in buffalo and cattle; and, estate papers. The strength of this fonds lies in its completeness. Nothing was thrown away and there are grocery lists, laundry lists, staff salary books, furniture receipts, party and wedding invitations, school report cards, ship and railway timetables, diaries and approximately 20,000 pieces of correspondence. This has resulted in a remarkable record of a large household from the 1880s to the 1980s and an invaluable source for social and business historians.

        SERIES B: REVEREND HENRY C. AVANT

        The Reverend Henry C. Avant was minister of Christ Church, Bobcaygeon and St. John's, Dunsford. He died in 1883 without leaving a will. As Avant's "oldest and most trusted friend" in Canada, it was up to Mossom Boyd to dispose of his personal effects.

        SERIES C: MOSSOM BOYD

        Mossom Boyd was born in India in 1815, the son of Colonel Gardiner Boyd of the Bengal Army. He emigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1834. Mossom settled in the Bobcaygeon area, clearing some land for himself and working in the lumber business. He quickly impressed his neighbours and associates with his industry and his business sense.
        Mossom leased from Thomas Need a gristmill, a sawmill and a house in 1843. The following year, Need returned to England and Mossom bought the three buildings. The same year, 1844, Mossom Boyd married Caroline Dunsford, of the Beehive. Mossom and Caroline hadsix children: Gardiner, Anne, Mary, Caroline, Mossom Martin and Emma.
        Between 1849 and 1855, Mossom was a partner in business with John Langton, who was married to Caroline Dunsford's sister. John Langton subsequently went into politics and gave up his lumberinterests.
        Caroline died in 1857, leaving Mossom with six children between the ages of one and twelve. Mossom found a mother for his children in Letitia Cust, whom he married within two years of Caroline's death. Mossom and Letitia also had two children of their own, William Thornton Cust and Letitia Kathleen.
        Mossom Boyd & Co. was incorporated in 1875. At this time, Mossom Boyd was making $200,000 a year in timber sales alone and had otherbusiness interests.
        When Letitia Cust died in 1881, Mossom was already ill. He died in 1883, leaving an estate worth $700,000.

        2 volumes of Shakespeare plays, bound with works of Sir Walter Scott. Included in one volume is a receipt for books sold to Mr. Nead [Thos. Need] dated York, 14th Dec. 1832. These volumes were apparently purchased by Mossom Boyd. Later, he (or more likely Mossom Martin Boyd) had them bound by R. Romaine, Printer, Bookbinder & Stationer, Peterboro'.

        SERIES D: MOSSOM MARTIN BOYD

        The Boyd family business reached its peak under Mossom Martin Boyd, as he diversified and expanded the business West. He was an innovative man, always willing to try something new, be it telephones, bicycles or breeding cattallo. Generally, he would start up a new business, get it going and then hand it over to his half-brother Willie to run while he started on another scheme.
        Mossom Martin Boyd, known as Mossie, was born in 1855. Although he was the second son in the family, it was he who inherited the entrepreneurial spirit from his father and took over the family business. His older brother Gardiner went into real estate in Toronto.

        Mossie was educated at Trinity College School in Port Hope where he made a close friend, Sutherland Macklem. He left school at the age of sixteen or seventeen and because he was needed in the family business. It seems he regretted not continuing his education. When Mossie had children of his own he made a point of sending them to the best schools at home and abroad.

        When Mossom Boyd died in 1883, Mossie took over the business. The same year he married Ida Lillian de Grassi. Mossie, W.T.C. Boyd (Willie), and their brother-in-law John Macdonald went into partnership together, but this was dissolved in 1892, when John Macdonald died. A new partnership was formed between Mossie and Willie.

        In 1882, the Boyds had bought the Big Island Stock Farm on an island near Bobcaygeon and here Mossie pioneered the breeding of polled Herefords and attempted to breed cattallo, a mixture of cattle and buffalo. The following year, Willie and Mossie started the Trent Valley Navigation Company to link up the lakes with the railway, using steamships. In 1890, they started their own railway, the Lindsay, Bobcaygeon and Pontypool Railway. In 1897,the Boyds bought timber rights in British Columbia, and a saw mill at Genoa, and the Cowichan Lumber Company was in business.

        By 1912, the Trent Navigation Company was closed down and the Mossom Boyd Company was made into a joint stock company. The children and nephews were given shares. At this time, the Cowichan Lumber Company represented the only lumber interests the Boyds had left.
        In 1914, Mossie began to suffer from anemia. At first the family could not persuade him to go into hospital, but convinced him to stay in Toronto close to medical attention. When Mossie's condition did not improve, he, Lillian and Laurie went to Philadelphia for further treatment and blood transfusions. Mossie died in Philadelphia in June 1914.

        SERIES E: IDA LILLIAN DE GRASSI BOYD

        Lillian Boyd's papers constitute a smaller collection within a collection. There are fourteen cubic feet of her papers, covering a time span from the 1860's to 1940. Owing to the variety of material, the Lillian Boyd series provides a comprehensive picture of the life of a household from late Victorian times to the Second World War.

        Lily appears to have kept papers for two reasons: practicality and sentimentality. While Sheila Boyd's papers reflect a concern for the family and what she saw as its place in history, Lily tended to save such items as theatre programmes, dance cards, children's drawings and personal letters. On the other hand, in true Boyd fashion, she kept a close record of all her expenses, and so there is a clear record of the household finances.

        Lily loved gardening. Her papers include many seed catalogues and much of the correspondence is about gardening. As well, there are photographs of the gardens and the greenhouse at Bobcaygeon, whichare magnificent.

        Ida Lillian de Grassi was born in Lindsay in 1858, the only child of Mrs. Annie de Grassi and Dr. Alexander William James de Grassi. Although most people called her Lily, she was later known as Pinkie and occasionally Monie.

        Early correspondence of Lily is essentially from friends and relatives. One of these correspondents was Stella (nee Weller, later Herriman and Moffat by marriage) who was a friend and a relative. Stella was a regular correspondent until Lily's death when she continued to write to Sheila until her own death in 1968. Stella's changes in fortune make an interesting history and especially so in contrast to Lily's life.

        Although she grew up in Lindsay, Lily seems to have taken an active part in the social life of Bobcaygeon. In 1883, she married Mossom Martin Boyd (Mossie) and in the next eleven years bore seven children. These were Mossom de Grassi (1884 - 1948), Gardiner Cust known as Cust (1885 - 1971), Laurence Chadwick or Laurie (1887 -?), Lillian Doris known as Doris (1889 - ?), Winnett Wornibe known as Brownie (1890 - 1950), Mildred Collinette (1892 - 1990) and Annie Sheila (1894 - 1982) known as Sheila.

        In the early years of the marriage, Mossie seems to have travelled a lot on business and his letters seem rather factual compared to the affectionate letters of Lily's parents. Traditionally the family spent summers in Bobcaygeon and winters elsewhere, generally renting a house in Toronto. In 1895, Lily's father died and her mother came to live in the house at Bobcaygeon. The children were first tutored at home and then sent away to school, some of them to school in England. The boys went to Oxford, as well. Lily went to England fairly often, especially when the children were there.The war years brought many changes to Lily's life. In 1914, Mossie died of anemia after a brief illness. Mossom de Grassi joined up and was sent to England in 1918, although he never saw any fighting. Laurie went to India with the Royal Flying Corps, marrying in England while still in training. Cust, also, married in 1916. Brownie went overseas and Mildred was a war bride, marrying a British naval officer and settling in England after the war. As well, in 1916, Lily's mother, Annie, died. Three of Lily's nephews, Thornton and Eric Boyd and Herbert Boyd Symonds were killed in the Great War.

        After the war Lily was left alone to spend the summers with Mossom de Grassi and Sheila in the house in Bobcaygeon and the winters in Toronto. Miss Isabella Macnab (Nabba) was hired as a companion for Lily and in the summers Jung Kay was hired to cook. In 1920 she visited Mildred and John Nind in England. Later that year came news of their baby's sickly condition and his death from pneumonia.

        Lily suffered her first stroke around 1933 and although paralyzed seems to have led a fairly full life until another stroke in 1938 affected her mind. She died in 1942.

        SERIES F: DE GRASSI PAPERS

        The papers in this series come from Lily de Grassi Boyd's parents, Dr. Alexander William James de Grassi and Mrs. Annie de Grassi. They mostly cover the 1860's to 1895 when the de Grassis lived on Wellington Street in Lindsay and Dr. de Grassi practiced medicine there. When Dr. de Grassi died in 1895, Mrs. de Grassi (known as Gran) moved into the Boyd House in Bobcaygeon, where she lived until her own death in 1916.

        Lillian Boyd's papers contain many letters from her parents and they were evidently very affectionate and took an active interest in Lily and Mossie's children.

        Dr. de Grassi was the son of Captain Phillipe de Grassi, an Italian, educated in France, who fought under Napoleon and was taken prisoner by the British. He settled in England and married Charlotte Hearn, an Englishwoman. In 1831, Phillipe de Grassi, Charlotte and their eight children came to Canada and homesteaded on the banks of the Don River. De Grassi also built a sawmill in the Don Valley. During the rebellion of 1837, de Grassi and his two daughters, Charlotte and Cornelia became loyalist heroes in a story to be found in Mossom de Grassi Boyd's papers. Phillipe deGrassi died penniless in Lindsay in 1877.

        SERIES G: GARDINER CUST BOYD

        Gardiner Cust Boyd, known as Cust, was born 1885, the second son of Mossom Martin and Lily Boyd. He was educated at Trinity College School, Port Hope and at Oxford University.

        In 1916, Cust married Grace Henderson and settled in Victoria, British Columbia. Along with Laurie, he ran the Cowichan Lumber Company. Cust and Grace had three children: Ottilie (born 1916), David (born 1918), and Pat (born 1921). David became a doctor and married Joan Sutherland. Pat married twice, once to John Arnoldi and once to a man named Stone. The family lived in Victoria, spending as much of their time as possible at Lake Cowichan.

        Cust's papers consist mostly of business papers from the Cowichan Lumber Company and correspondence with Mossom de Grassi about the M.M. Boyd Estate as well as some personal correspondence. Cust was a regular correspondent with his mother, and so was Grace, and many of their letters can be found among Lily's papers. Cust's letters are lively and full of details to amuse his mother. Grace's letters are charming and often illustrated with little drawings. Cust died in 1971.

        SERIES H: MILDRED BOYD NIND

        Mildred's papers mostly date from her school days up to the middle of World War I, but as she spent many years in England, her lively and outspoken letters can be found throughout the collection in the other family members' papers.
        Mildred Collinette Boyd was born in 1892, the middle daughter of Mossom Martin and Lillian Boyd. She attended Wycombe Abbey in England between 1908 and 1910. From 1911 to 1914 she studied violin and German in Berlin, Germany. Mildred returned to Bobcaygeon in 1914 in time to see her father before he died. During World War I, much of her correspondence concerns the knitting she did for the Red Cross.

        In July 1918, Mildred married Captain John Nind in Halifax, and lived most of her married life in England. A son, John Roderick Nind, was born in 1920, but died in 1921 of pneumonia. In 1922, Ann Nind was born.

        In the late 1930's the Ninds moved to Victoria and built a house there. By the outbreak of the Second World War John and Mildred were back in England but Ann was sent to Bobcaygeon to spend the duration of the war in the care of Mossom de Grassi and Sheila Boyd. Mildred and John's letters from this time (see Series G) are very bitter about Germany and British politics although they seem fairly stoic about the war itself. In 1944 Ann married William Neilson. With Sheila's death in 1982, Mildred was the last surviving sibling.

        SERIES I: WINNETT WORNIBE BOYD

        Winnett Wornibe Boyd (Brownie) was the youngest of the four Boyd sons and was born in 1890. As a boy, he was educated at Trinity College School, Port Hope and Shrewsbury School in England. He went on to Oxford and got a degree in mining engineering at McGill.

        After finishing at McGill in 1913, Brownie was anxious to marry Marjorie St. George (Monnie), the daughter of family friends with whom he'd had an understanding for five years. In spite of family opposition on the grounds that the couple were too young, Brownie and Monnie were married in September 1913. Strangely enough, Lily did not attend the wedding and instead went to England to visit Mildred and Sheila who were in school there.

        After the wedding, Brownie was to study at Osgoode Hall. This was an idea of Mossom Martin's to bring Brownie into the family business, following Mossom Martin's cousin H.J. Wickham as legal counsel. It is not clear from the papers whether Brownie finished his legal studies after the war broke out, but it seems likely that he did.

        During World War I, Brownie joined the Canadian Field Artillery and Marjorie followed him to Wales. He appears to be the only one of the four brothers to see active service at the front and his letters home describe the experience. In 1916, he left the artillery to join the Royal Flying Corps, where he was an Artillery Observer. After the war, he continued to train the militia in the summers.

        Brownie and Monnie had four children. St. George, born 1914, became a clergyman, Winnett, born 1916, became one of the world's foremost aeronautical engineers, Laurence was born in 1921 and Ann(Bridgie) was born 1923.

        By 1920, Brownie and Monnie had separated, and although they were reconciled and had another child, they were divorced by 1928. At this time Brownie married a woman named Ena, and this marriage seems to have lasted until 1933. Brownie married a third time, to Beatrice in 1938.
        After his first divorce, Brownie settled in the Montreal area and worked as legal counsel for the Canadian National Railway. As a child, he seemed to take more interest in raising animals than his siblings and kept this interest as an adult, in spite of living in the city. Brownie died in 1950.

        SERIES J: LAURENCE CHADWICK BOYD

        Laurence Chadwick Boyd, or Laurie, was born in 1887, the third son of Mossom Martin and Lillian. He was educated at Trinity College School, Port Hope and Shrewsbury School in England. Between 1907and 1909, he studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford where he also rowed. Laurie qualified as an engineer at McGill in 1911. One of his McGill friends, Clyde Gillies, worked in mining in theTransvaal for a time and was engaged to Sheila at the end of World War I.

        After graduation, Laurie worked for the Laurentide company at Grand'mere, Quebec. During his father's illness in 1914, he went to Philadelphia with his parents. He was the donor in some blood transfusions for his father.

        During the war, Laurie signed up with the Royal Flying Corps. While he was training in England, he met a young Australian widow, Ethele Findlay Godfrey. Within two months of their first meeting, Ethele and Laurie were married on May 17, 1916. Shortly after, Laurie was sent to India with the Royal Flying Corps. Ethele followed, living in Murree while Laurie lived in barracks at Risalpur. In India, the Royal Flying Corps was engaged in suppressing rebellions on the North-West border.
        In 1919, Laurie and Ethele returned to Canada and settled in British Columbia. They never had any children, but after Ethele's death Laurie married Claire, who had two children.

        SERIES K: MOSSOM DE GRASSI BOYD

        Mossom de Grassi Boyd was a meticulous man. He had the attention to detail that could have made him a good businessman, but he lacked the flair and the drive that characterized his father's and his grandfather's business dealings. He kept careful accounts of his spending, lists of books read, and copies of his correspondence. Mossom made rough notes of his day's activities and copied them neatly into his diary. His handwriting was beautiful and ornate.

        Mossom de Grassi was not robust and always seemed to be ill. He was always concerned about his health and would subscribe to dubious treatments such as exercise courses to make him taller orthyroid treatments for migraines. On the other hand, he was an avid golfer and he curled.
        The oldest son of Mossom Martin and Lillian, Mossom de Grassi Boyd was born in 1884. He attended Upper Canada College in Toronto and Trinity College School in Port Hope. Between 1903 and 1907 he studied at Lincoln College, Oxford where he received his B.A. On his return to Canada, Mossom apprenticed to a surveyor in British Columbia. In 1910 he started work towards a degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto.

        Of the four brothers, Mossom was the only one to spend his adult life in Ontario and he was the one most responsible for the M.M. Boyd Estate. As well, he seemed to spend the summers, if not the winters with his mother, looking after her finances and handling much of her correspondence after she became ill. He dealt with any requests for genealogical information about his family and his papers include correspondence with two historians who were researching the deGrassis.
        Mossom de Grassi Boyd died in 1948 of a heart attack. After his death, he was described in a letter of condolence to Sheila as a gentleman of another era.

        SERIES L: A. SHEILA BOYD

        Annie Sheila Boyd was the youngest child of Mossom M. and Lillian Boyd. Sheila attended schools in both England and Germany. While she was away at school, Sheila's father became ill and was eventually taken to a hospital in Philadelphia in 1914 and died shortly after. When Sheila returned home from school she moved back into her parents' home. Up until the early 1930s the house was used only during the summer and closed up during the winter while Sheila and her mother stayed in Toronto. Afterwards the house at Bobcaygeon was used year-round. About 1933 Sheila's mother, Lillian, suffered a stroke and was bedridden. Sheila helped to nurse her until her death in 1942. Although she never married, Sheila was engaged for some time to Clyde Gillies, a friend of her brother, Laurie.

        Two of Sheila's pastimes were painting and gardening. Her talent for growing flowers and arranging gardens won her many prizes and her paintings did well in competitions at local fairs. She was also very much involved with the girl guides and helped to organize the Jubilee Camp in 1927.

        The letters in this series are mainly socially oriented, many of them are from Miss Maynard Grange, a distant relative and Sheila's closest friend. Some of the earlier papers contain Sheila's diaries and account books as well as tests and report cards. Sheila's notes are of interest because they contain first drafts of her letters to other people and help to complete the picture of what her life was like. The receipts, account books and bills give us an idea of what was involved in running such a large household. Letters that were written during the war years show how the lives of families in Canada were affected and how they contributed to the war effort.
