    Administrative history

In 1792, the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham were officially created in a proclamation made by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe. The proclamation divided Upper Canada in 19 Counties for representation purposes. The United Counties are bounded by Lake Ontario in the south, Hasting County in the east, Ontario County in the west and Peterborough and Victoria Counties in the north. The town line between Hope and Hamilton Townships divide the two counties. Durham County consists of the Townships of Cartwright, Manvers, Cavan, Darlington, Clarke and Hope. Northumberland County consists of South Monaghan, Hamilton, Haldimand, Alnwick, Percy, Cramahe, Seymour, Brighton and Murray Townships. General note

NOTE: Detailed lists of the birth and baptism records and marriage records filed in 1852 were prepared by Sharon Molotkow, whose efforts on this project are greatly appreciated. Lists of the burial records and remaining marriage records were prepared by Jodi Aoki, Trent University Archives. A printed copy of the index is located inside the box. These records are indexed and appended as: Series A (Marriage Records); Series B (Birth/Baptism Records); Series C (Burial Records)

Nota Bene: These records are the lists returned by the local clergy. The Registers in the Ontario Archives represent the copied documents. There are many records in this fonds which are not in the Registers.

        SERIES B: Birth/Baptism Records

Introduction: The following pages contain the Birth and Baptism Records deposited by various ministers in the Northumberland District of persons born/baptized between 1836 and 1854. (Note: There is also one entry from 1828). (Note: Some documents contain only birth records, some only baptism records, and some both birth and baptism records). The records were deposited with the Cobourg County Court House and have since been given to Trent University.

The material itself represents secondary sources. Clergymen were listing the various births, marriages and deaths, in some cases years after the fact. In certain cases, one minister is reporting the activity of a second minister. The majority of these ministers were Methodist. There was no evidence of Anglican or Roman Catholic submissions.

The transcription maintains the original spelling except in cases where a very obvious mistake has been made. In cases where words were not completely decipherable, square brackets have been used.

Some documents have original identifying numbers. Those which have numbers followed by a "#" were numbered by Sharon Molotkow to assist in identification of the documents.

The following pages list the entries in document order. An alphabetic index by surname is included as well.

Special thanks to Sharon Molotkow who prepared the following indexes.

NOTE: As in the case of Marriage Records, there are some stray baptisms interfiled in other documents series. For Baptism Records which are included with other documents please consult the following:
