Biographical history
John Norton author, explorer, soldier, trader, and politician, led what has been recognized as a varied and intriguing life among the native populations of North America from Georgina to the Grand River in Upper Canada, where he was a close friend and adviser to Joseph Brant. Norton himself was of Cherokee descent on his father's side.
Custodial history
The letters were turned over to the Archives of Ontario by Dr. George Spragge, who discovered them in the Ontario Historical Society's vault in the old Normal School, Gerrard Street East, Toronto. The microfilm was created by the Archives of Ontario and purchased by the Trent University Archives.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of microfilmed copies of undated and dated correspondence, and papers from 1796 to 1842. Topics included are: Mohawk rationing, relations with Joseph Brant and his family, Indian land administration in Upper Canada and United States, family/personal news, and Six Nations Affairs. The fonds also includes papers, notes and correspondence of J. McE. Murray of the Ontario Historical Society regarding the Ontario Historical Society's papers and records (Vol. 37, 1945).
