        History

Trent-ESL provided support for English language learners at Trent University until its closure in Spring 2026. Over the years, responsibilities for English as a Second Language teaching fell under the Trent International Program (founded in 1982) and the Self-Instruction Centre (founded in 1975 and became the Academic Skills Centre in 1981/82). Trent ESL started, as a formal program, in the summer of 1998, with 2 students as a pilot project. The program at Trent Durham began in 2011. Trent-ESL grew to offer many forms of programming, including classes, camps, social events and trips, and training for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Staff also participated in international student recruitment efforts.
